John Porterfield: worked at WCEN (1150, Mount Pleasant)
as a transmitter engineer while finishing college in the late '40s.
John helped to put WMTE (1340, Manistee) on the air in 1951.
He re-joined WCEN in 1952 and helped move the studios from
downtown to the new studio building at the transmitter site
on Bluegrass Road. He also worked on-air at the station.
John left WCEN to work as an engineer at WKNX-TV (then on
channel 57) in Saginaw, which had gone on the air in April
1953. Later, he helped put WIOS (1480, Tawas) on the air in the
fall of 1958. John joined WKYO (1360, Caro) and did engineering
and on-air work for a number of years, hosting a morning farm
show and talk show. He also helped build the studios for WMIC in
Sandusky, MI. After a number of years in Texas, John retired to
the Mount Pleasant area. He passed away in April 2007.
