Steve Cole: was a transmitter engineer at WCEN
(1150, Mount Pleasant) when the station went on the air in 1949.
He succeeded Walt Maxwell as Chief Engineer later that year.
As WCEN General Manager, he constructed the three-tower
directional array in 1951 that allowed fulltime operation.
He left WCEN in the summer of 1952 to found Communications
Engineering Service, a broadcasting consulting and Two-Way Radio
business.
Steve joined WMTE (1340, Manistee) in 1953 as Chief
Engineer and General Manager, where he served through 1959.
As a
part-time broadcasting consultant, he performed engineering
duties again for WMTE and WRRK (97.7, Manistee) in the 1970s.
He remained in Manistee, retiring from Packaging Corporation of
America in 1982. Steve passed away in September, 1998.
